Tips for Tricycle Safety

Before you child is ready to hit the road on a bike, he/she will most likely cruise the neighborhood on a trike. Trikes, or tricycles, are three-wheeled bikes, meaning they are more stable for your youngster and a great segue to a standard two-wheeled bike.

Bust just because a trike is more stable does not mean it is completely safe. Therefore, when your little speed demon takes to the streets, keep these tips in mind.

~Always, always have your child wear a helmet. There is no excuse and no exception. Your kid might not reach the speed or height of an adult bike, but that doesn’t mean he/she can’t get hurt. If your child is worried about looking cool, consider getting them a Nogin Sox cover for the helmet.

~Be present when they ride. As an added bonus, it’s a great time to squeeze in that extra exercise. While they are peddling around the block, follow on foot. This way, they’re safe, and you’re healthy.

~Make sure the trike is a good fit. Your kid is growing quickly, so make sure the trike is still a safe size. Too big or too small can be awkward and, consequently, unsafe.

All in all, use general bike safety rules and common sense, and your kid will have an enjoyable and exciting toy.

Nogin Sox Decorative Helmet Covers

nogin-sox-dinoI came across a really cool gadget recently - a decorative helmet cover designed to attach to a protective sport helmet encouraging its use. After all, if you don’t wear it, it can’t protect you. These unique covers come in a variety of really cute designs- some with flashy lights, adding to their conspicuousness - especially at night.

While it must stay on the rider’s head to protect it from hits, the helmet should have a slow release buckle after a few seconds of steady pressure to avoid strangulation. To stay on your head, it must be level on the head and not tilted back exposing the forehead. Try it on before you buy it and confirm its interior can conform to your particular head bumps. A particular problem may arise if you wear a ponytail or braided hair. Few helmets accomodate these problems. It should hold securely and not stretch or change over time from wear, sweat, lotion, or tugging. Something as simple as wearing a sweatband might help alleviate these problems.

Making your helmet conspicuous can have a big impact on safety since if a driver can see you they will be more likely to try and avoid hitting you. The nogin sox certainly do this - after all, how often do you see someone with a flashing dinosaur, a synapsing brain, or a spiked mohawk? Beware of reflective tape on helmets as it is rarely effective; active lights are far superior to reflective materials.

Another important fact: your helmet is good for only one bad crash. After that the interior is usually damaged and the helmet should be replaced.

Some grim statistics: non-helmeted riders are 14 times more likely to die in crashes than helmeted riders; head injuries account for more than 60% of bike related deaths and it is estimated that anywhere from 45-88% of cyclists’ brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet. Moral of the story: find  a helmet that fits and wear it! And do it in style with nogin sox.

Switch It Organizer

I’m a business woman who likes to have my shoes and handbag match and co-ordinate with my outfit. Its probably a generational thing -remember the days when your turquoise velvet hat and gloves HAD TO MATCH your shoes and purse? No? Well anyway…. Changing purses frequently (or even briefcases) can be a drag but this handy switch it organizer makes life less complicated. You simply lift it out of one bag and transfer it to another. And, although the trim is colorful the organizer is clear so its convenient to take to the airport (no more zip lock baggies).

They come in three different sizes and a multitude of colors and prints. What a unique and innovative solution. Wish I’d found it long ago!
