Childhood Independence

twist-and-spoutMy six-year-old son used to want me to do everything for him—from getting him dressed in the morning to blowing his nose. After his last birthday, however, he has developed a desire for independence. He now insists on doing things for himself and often gets livid if you offer assistance.

While my husband and I don’t mind allowing him some freedom, there are certain tasks that we like to have some supervision over. Last week, for example, he tried to pour himself a glass of juice only to have the two-liter container slip from his hands and flood the kitchen with sugary liquid. After this little debacle, we invested in a twist and spout to give him more control when he pours.

If you’re a MAC user, you probably know that there is some argument over which computer is better-the PC (used to refer to anything other than a Mac) or the Mac. Is there really much of a difference between that Apple laptop and that desktop PC? Though both types of computers can get the job done, there is a difference–and it’s mostly in the operating systems of the two computers.

The operating system, which is what runs all the software through the computer, is the main difference between a PC and a Mac. Only a few years back the various operating systems presented a major problem. Many programs were not compatible across the platforms. But in recent years many programs have been rewritten to allow common applications like Excel, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger, to be available on Macs and PCs. Remember, it’s what’s inside that counts; if you don’t like the aesthetics, you can always cover it with a laptop skin.

It’s the Little Things that Count

water-broomWe all tend to notice the big favors and tasks that people do, but those small, everyday tasks often go unnoticed. It wasn’t until I first left for college and started living on my own that I appreciated all of the little things that my parents did. Suddenly I was spending money on toilet paper, soap and other items that I had previously taken for granted.

Another thing that I wasn’t completely cognizant of was the amount of housework that my mom did. After a couple of weeks, my house, admittedly, was somewhat of a pigsty. I realized that I had to invest in some cleaning supplies and promptly went out to purchase a water broom and some glass cleaner

skyns-laptop-cover1As I was sipping my morning coffee at a sidewalk cafe I noticed a pretty fashion statement at the table next to me. No, I’m not talking about a woman; rather the ultimate in notebook styling - a laptop cover with a crystal initial which I’ve since learned is called a Skyn. What a conversation starter. Apparently this was not only an extension of her sophisticated personality, but it made it easy to identify and conspicuous of thieves.

I plan to check into these myself (not so much to reflect my debonair haute couture since I tend to be a bit more pragmatic) because eventually I plan to sell my laptop and the skin seems to protect it from scratches. PS - we have a date next week.

Pushbroom - Waterbroom

water-broom1Ever tried cleaning the garage floor or driveway by yourself?  First hose it out, then run for the push broom to sweep it out.  Then back to the hose and on and on.  Meanwhile the water is rushing back into every niche and corner.  I recently ran across a- water broom push broom that does it all- in-one.  This gadget attaches a bristle head that has 14 built in power jets to a handle that attaches to any standard garden hose nozzle.  The handle is aluminum so its lightweight even with the water running through it.  With an on/off valve  on the handle you can conserve water when all you want to do is brush or scrub.  Believe me its saves a lot of time, energy and water -  not to mention the mess of puddling and pooling.
